FED: GST likely to cost car jobs NTAA
Accountants say Australia's car industry could shed significant numbers of jobs in
the New Year if the government doesn't act against a GST-caused crisis.
The National Tax and Accountants Association says that following Mitsubishi's confirmation
of further job cuts, the government must break the buyers' strike leading to the July
2000 introduction of the 10 per cent GST.
Association president RAY REGAN says the government can achieve this by immediately
winding back the 22 per cent wholesale sales tax on cars to 15 per cent.
He says it's inevitable there could be much more significant job losses around the corner.
Mr REGAN says the government is being negligent in not conceding motorists correctly
believe they'll get a minimum six per cent cut in the cost of a car when the GST is introduced
next July.
